Thoughts on our study Facetism vs Systemic Research Failures: Independent, Result-Driven, and Implementable Knowledge

Research exists for one practical reason: to produce knowledge that improves the chances of successful action, so it is very tightly related to the ability to foresee outcomes. Every living system gathers information, forms a strategy, and then implements it with adaptive leeway, humans simply do this more deliberately. When research stops serving that sequence, it becomes either an expensive ritual or a commercial product designed to keep the client dependent.
Our new study examines (see PDF below) the two systems that currently dominate formal research and shows why both systematically under-deliver:
Academic research is organized around funding, citations, h-index scores, and the performance of “rigor.”
Large commercial consulting is organized around revenue continuity and client retention.
Both use versions of the same basic toolkit—quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods—yet both subordinate the original purpose of knowledge to the metrics that keep their own institutions alive.
Academic research at its best is careful and cumulative. In practice it too often produces long, formalistic exercises that are difficult to read and weakly linked to decisions. The five-chapter template, the conceptual framework, and the demand for methodological purity become ends in themselves. Students and researchers stay busy; taxpayers fund the activity; the predictive and strategic value frequently remains low.
Consulting firms noticed the gap and turned it into a business model. They kept the essential sequence (baseline, analysis, recommendation) but stripped away most of the language and length that clients find unusable. The result is more readable and more decision-oriented—yet it is also structured to leave the client needing further engagement. Enough insight is delivered to justify the fee; rarely is enough capability transferred for the organization to proceed independently.
AFODI’s own research philosophy is different, we believe in independent research meant to lead to actual solutions and thus be implemented. Our research is therefore built on Facetism and rejects pure formalism and disciplinary isolation. In practice this means research begins with the decision or strategic requirement at stake, not with a literature gap or a client’s preferred framing. Evidence is drawn across relevant domains. Analysis traces secondary and tertiary consequences rather than stopping at first-round effects. Recommendations are ranked by feasibility under current constraints and are written so that the organization can act and later adapt without permanent dependence on the researcher.
AFODI does not produce research to satisfy academic ranking systems or to generate recurring consulting revenue. We produce research that small, middle and large organizations, reformers, and decision-makers can actually use.
